How to Read Blogs

Many people have e-mailed me to ask, “How can I read blogs more easily?” Perhaps more importantly, “Why should I read blogs at all?” I started to write on this topic myself and stumbled on an excellent article by Stephen O’Grady over at tecosystems. He says,

The purpose of this post is to give the many people who still haven’t gotten into blogs—i.e. not my regular readers—a simple, step-by-step example of how to dip a toe in the blogging waters.

The article is entitled How to Get into Blogs 101. It is definitely worth a read if you are interested. One of the most helpful parts of his post is how to set up a blog reader.

I'd rather need "How can I keep up with all interesting blogs and still have time for other stuff" :P

Indeed, keeping up with all the interesting blog content is a challenge! One way to help manage this is to save articles to your Bloglines "Clip Blog" (think shareable bookmarks for blog content).

This way, you have a record of the articles you want to read later/more of, and others can subscribe to (or just read) your clip blog and benefit from using you as a filter for interesting content.

I wrote a short summary of Clip Blogs in my article "Why I have 2 blogs", at:

Ok, Michael, you've inspired me to take on a large project. I'm in a large school system -- http://www.guilford.k12.nc.us -- (approximately 67,000 students and 8,000 employees) and, due to your example at Thomas Nelson, have begun campaigning for something similar here. It's a great way to bring the public back into public education and to let them have a peek inside a large system. I've contacted the central office and painted the picture of the superintendent, principals, teachers, custodians, bus drivers, etc. blogging with an aggregator page being designed to draw them all together. I've even sent them to your corporate blogging guidelines to see what you've done. I'll keep you posted on this!

Bert, This is awesome. I think it would be a huge success! I hope it goes well. Michael

Bert, I dont know if it fits what you want to do, but you could use a civic-oriented CVS as your online engine. Specifically, Drupal. You could have all those different people blogging with different pages for everyone to see what blogs everyone else has done, recently, archived, whatever. It may sound a little daunting but you might want to head over to www.drupal.org to check it out.
Just an idea.

Michael - If you're finding that you have too many feeds to read within your allotted feedreading time, I have written a simple web application called Bloglines Splicer that distributes your feedreading evenly among all your feeds. This way, you can walk away from the computer at any time knowing that you have reviewed all of the feeds to the best of your ability, given the time constraints. If you think this tool might be useful to you, it's at http://jonaquino.blogspot.com/2005/04/bloglines-splicer-improvement-on.html
